SWAIM, James Edwin 67, beloved husband, father, uncle, and friend, of Dayton, Ohio, lost his battle with cancer on Friday, February 7, 2014, at Miami Valley Hospital. He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Muriel (Ricker) Swaim, his sister Karen Walden, and his son Christian Ward Swaim. He is survived by his wife, Marsha Swaim of Beavercreek; son and daughter-in-law, Gregory James and Jennifer of Cincinnati; son Steven Ward of Denver; daughter Jessica Marie, of Tampa; nephew Shon Swaim; and niece Heather Walden. Jim was born in Dayton, Ohio, on April 24, 1946, and was graduated in 1964 from Fairview High School, where he was a three-sport athlete. Jim was an enthusiastic member of the Boy Scouts of America and became an Eagle Scout. After turning down football scholarships from several major universities, including Annapolis, West Point, and Duke, Jim chose Miami University, in Oxford, where he played football for Bo Schembechler, and became a member of Beta Theta Pi. Jim received a Bachelor of Science degree as a member of the first graduating class at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, in 1968. He received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Cincinnati School of Law in 1971, where he was a member of Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. Jim was then admitted to the practice of law, in Ohio, and returned to Dayton to enter the private practice in which he specialized in adoption law and related matters for the next 38 years; first as a member (and Managing Partner) of Stewart, Flanagan, Hoffman & Swaim (1971 to 1986) and then as Managing Partner of Flanagan, Lieberman, Hoffman, and Swaim, until the day he died. In addition to the State of Ohio, Jim was admitted to practice before the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He was a member of the American, Ohio State, Dayton, and Dayton Women’s Bar Associations and had served as both Chair and Vice-Chair of the Dayton Bar Association Ethics Committee. Jim was a member of the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys, and served as Special Counsel for the Ohio Attorney General since 1995. Jim has served as counsel for approximately 3000 adoptions locally, nationally, and internationally. Jim was an avid golfer and a member of the Country Club of the North, The Dayton Racquet Club, Otsego Country Club (Gaylord, MI), and a Past-President of the Sycamore Country Club. Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family with the Senior Pastor Rev. Sherry L. Gale officiating. The family will receive friends and loved ones at the Dayton Racquet Club Thursday, February 13 from 4-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the James E. Swaim Foundation. Donations to the James E. Swaim Foundation may be received at the office of Flanagan, Lieberman, Hoffman, and Swaim, care of Brad Smith.
